Welcome to the Riviera Maya Mexico

Travel south for about 40 minutes 60 kilometers from Cancun Int airport and you're in Playa del Carmen, the happy heart of the Mayan Riviera,a slice of Caribbean coastline offering 120 kilometres of holiday pleasure. Mayan civilization arrived here more than 3000 years ago and is one of the most prominent ancient cultures in the Americas, with a distinct style, complex religion, rich mythology and great accomplishments in the fields of mathematics, astrology and architecture. More than 350,000 Mayans still live in today's Yucatan but those you meet these days are building resorts and hotels, not temples. However, the legacy of the original Maya nation can be seen in the ruins scattered through the region - some within easy reach of Playa del Carmen. Day trips to spectacular ruins like Tulum are easily arranged and anyone who likes history should find them fascinating - and photogenic too! Some of the contrasts are stunning. Playa del Carmen has grown from a small fishing village to one of the world's ultimate beach resorts, a city geared to make tourists comfortable. English is an unofficial second language. From Playa del Carmen it is easy and convinience exploring more of the Riviera Maya. The area has seductive beaches, clear turquoise seas, the Great Maya Reef off shore, and a unique underground river system that flows through massive caverns, complete with cenotes (sink holes) that offer divers and snorkelers entrance to a magical world. There are towns and developments such as Puerto Aventuras,Playacar, where golf courses, swimming with the dolphins, deep-sea fishing, snorkeling and scuba diving are easy to find. Originally named Xaman-Ha (waters of the north) Playa del Carmen is a vibrant resort town some 60 kilometres (40 miles) south of Cancun. Playa, as it's now affectionately known, is blessed with miles of unspoiled white sandy beaches and is the perfect base from which to explore the rest of the Riviera Maya. Exciting excursions abound. The ruins of Tulum aren't too far. Cozumel is just a short ferry ride away. And there are the ecoparks and wildlife refuges such as Sian Ka'an and Rio Lagartos. Cozumel is close to being a "must-visit" place. The biggest island in Mexico is surrounded by spectacular coral reefs and is a scuba diver's paradise that was featured in a documentary by the legendary Jacques Cousteau.
